Sage kings recorded sacred texts on silk and rolls of silk were the luxury and lightweight way to correspond. One discovery is of a jade tablet of pure white, bearing an engraved inscription of 170 characters in the Li style for the Emperor's sacrifice to heaven.
Considered the most exquisite material for writing, some lengths were pre-marked with lines in vermilion and more were fashioned by weaving the lines into silk for writing.
Scholars arranged the oldest known literature formed this way, the Mawangdui Silk Texts into 28 books. The 120,000 words cover military strategy, mathematics, cartography and the 6 classical arts ~ ritual, music, archery, horsemanship, writing and arithmetic.
